These are relatively simple in expression with white stripes on a blue background, in a form of staggered grid pattern. The grid, as motif and form was a prominent presence in minimalistic art in the s. According to the art theorist Rosalind Krauss, who wrote an important essay on the use of the grid in Modern art, the grid already appeared in cubism in the early s as a marker of modern form.
Today, the grid is perhaps associated more with computer graphics and pixels on screens.
In his prints, Ledaal plays with this structure, breaks it up and hence, creates contrasts between the rigid squares, bent and floating forms, he draws a section of a landscape with mountains and valleys, and in this respect, connects with landscape painting, historically dominant in Norwegian art history, but also to cartography as a m
